Bhutan, officially the Royal Government of Bhutan, is a small, landlocked nation in Asia, located in the eastern Himalaya mountains, south of China, bordering the Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and Nepal and Bangladesh. The country occupies an area of 38,394 km² and hosts a multiethnic population of 760,000 inhabitants (in 2015).
In order to augment the citizen’s well being, the Ministry of Bhutan took this unique initiative of implementing an integrated healthcare system in the country to centralise the overall medical data of the country’s population on a single platform.
The Electronic Patient Information System is a comprehensive, integrated and fully automated ICT-based platform to help transform the entire healthcare service delivery system through all the health facilities run by the government of Bhutan. It is designed to manage the overall function of government healthcare facilities, including patient care, hospital administration and other corresponding services and processes
It aims to enable the ministry and the facility-level administrators for quick decision making and optimal utilisation of resources. ePIS is envisaged to be a central initiative guiding and integrating all other programs and schemes towards the achievement of envisaged targets and objectives of improving health care services and their administration in Bhutan.
The ePIS aims to provide better health services to the citizens through the use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and automated procedures in
the Hospitals. The RoHB aims to replace the traditional, isolated paper based prescription by a holistic, centrally stored electronic medical records for all the patients.
This approach not
only improves efficiency and transparency in the Hospital System but also provides quality health care to patients.
Moreover, the ePIS is also guided by the vision of a nation with the best health, where the health sector has emphasized the
importance of using ICT-enabled solutions to improve the delivery of quality health service to the people of Bhutan.
